The Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability is a new specialty center program based at Varina High School. Varina, a unique area filled with greenery, serves as the perfect location to conduct environmental studies. Additionally, the center is located just miles from the James River. The James River contains diverse species, presenting endless opportunities for research and study.

The Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability will provide students with a unique opportunity to expand their understanding of environmental stewardship and sustainable energy through student-centered learning, community partnerships and foundational academic knowledge and practices. The curriculum will prepare students to be life-ready while providing an unparalleled learning environment. The Center provides students with an environmentally and historically rich location which provides a wealth of opportunities for experiential and place-based learning.

Students interested in an integrated approach to environmental science and sustainability, enjoy outdoor, field-based, hands-on learning experiences are encouraged to apply. The Center seeks learners from all backgrounds and experiences to join our inclusive environment for authentic and relevant learning.

Students graduating from the Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability will be able to provide the leadership to tackle the future of environmental challenges from an integrated perspective, including scientific, social, political and historical facets.
